Resumen

Introduction: Menarche is a significant hormone-mediated event that initiates the repro- ductive cycle of every girl. The age of onset is associated with multiple subsequent health repercussions. In order to determine the presence of menarche in a group of girls in a rural community, the following question was established: How many girls between 9 and 14 years old have had their first menstruation in the community of Mata Gorda, Baní, Peravia, Domi- nican Republic, during the period August-September 2023?

Objectives: To determine the presence of menarche in girls aged 9 to 14 years in the commu- nity of Mata Gorda, Baní, Peravia, Dominican Republic, during the period August-September 2023; and to relate it with weight, height and body mass index (BMI) by age.

Methodology: In an observational, prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study, girls attending three schools in the community were evaluated. A data collection form developed by the authors was used, as well as a digital scale and a stadiometer to obtain the anthropo- metric variables and the age at menarche was determined by the status quo method.

Results: The mean age of the girls evaluated was 10.55±1.71, the age of menarche in girls was between 12 and 13 years old, with a mean age of 12.35±1.49. At the age of menarche, the weight was between 42.43 and 47.96 kg, the heights were between 157.6 and 162 cm, and the body mass index for age was between 17.07 kg/m² and 18.2 kg/m².

Conclusions: In this population, 50% of the girls had already had their first menstruation between the ages of 12 and 13. Weight, height and BMI increases as the age of menarche approaches.
